When implementing OSHA1910.147, “The Control of Hazardous Energy,” one is required to attach a tag and a padlock to the locking device protecting the equipment. But what is the best way for the tag in question to have the most impact? All tags must have the OSHA (or ANSI) DANGER header, along with the phrase “Do Not Operate.” However more can be done to raise awareness to all the personnel involved in a lockout situation. By adding a photograph of the person performing maintenance during the lockout situation and including the phrase “My Life Is OnThe Line” makes this tag stand out and really brings out the Safety Message.
When workers notice the photograph on the tag of the person working on equipment during a lockout and notices the “My Life Is On The Line” message, the realization quickly sets in that there is a “Real” person working there. One with a wife and children back home waiting for him to come up. And that is enough to insure that those workers will adhere to the safety procedures that have been set in place.
It is quite easy to produce and distribute “Real-Life” tags at a facility. Photos can be taken with a digital camera and stored in a computer. Then printed out on a desk-top printer. They are then cut out and placed on the tag. The tag can be made of heavy-duty card stock and once the photo is placed on the tag and all pertinent information entered, the tag can be laminated with a corresponding tag laminating pouch. Should additional information need to be added after lamination, a matte-finished tag laminating pouch can be used. Simply add information with a pencil or marker.
An alternate to way of producing the tag is to purchase the pressure-sensitive cover type. With this type of tag, after the photo and pertinent information added, simply remove the “release” paper from the pressure-sensitive clear plastic top and smooth it down over the tag. Whichever way you choose, that powerful Safety message will be present.
The “Real-Life” tags are available with other printed messages as well, or they can be custom printed to fit your specific needs. They are also readily available in French and Spanish as well. Other languages can be provided as well, on request.
